jimmcphail.com – Jim McPhail, a Juried Member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, started turning in 1988 and has been a full-time professional since he moved to western North Carolina’s mountains in 1994. McPhail has been featured on UNC-TV’s Our State and in American Woodturner magazine with his article on turning layered bowls. McPhail has developed a style of small bowl-making involving the lamination of multiple layers of different colors, textures and thicknesses of wood. He is especially well known for his bright, smooth finishes. McPhail is currently on the Board of Directors of the Carolina Mountain Woodturners.

Guilds and Associations:

carolinamountainwoodturners.org – Carolina Mountain Woodturners provides education and instructional assistance to all interested woodturners regardless of experience level. They have become one of the top chapters of the American Association of Woodturners in the country by having top demonstrators for each monthly meeting, by arranging mentor relationships between club members, and by having a library of instructional books, videotapes, and DVD’s available to members. Monthly meetings are a joint endeavor with The Southern Highland Craft Guild, where we furnish the top demonstrators, teachers and equipment, and they furnish the world class facility at the Folk Art Center in Asheville.

southernhighlandguild.org – The Southern Highland Craft Guild begain as Allanstand Cottage Industries in 1890. The Guild was chartered in 1930, and today it is one of the strongest guilds in the country with over 900 members in 9 southern states. Items made by crafters can be purchased online, as well as in 5 shops in NC, TN and KY. Their showcase, the Allanstand Craft Shop, is located on the grounds of the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville.

The Folk Art Center showcases the finest in traditional and contemporary craft of the Southern Appalachians. It houses the Southern Highland Craft Guild’s century-old Allanstand Craft Shop, exhibitions in three galleries, a library and an auditorium. The Folk Art Center was opened in 1980 as a cooperative effort between the Southern Highland Craft Guild, the National Park Service and the Appalachian Regional Commission. The Folk Art Center is the most popular attraction on the Blue Ridge Parkway, welcoming 250,000 visitors each year. From March through December, visitors can observe craftspeople at work in daily craft demonstrations as well as a series of educational events held year round. The Folk Art Center also houses the Eastern National Bookstore and Information Center. Free Admission.

greenvillewoodworkers.com – The Greenville Woodworkers Guild (South Carolina). Founded in 1981, their vision is to serve the community by developing an association to promote the art of woodworking, to provide woodworking education, and to perform charitable activities. Their site has many features of interest, from woodworking plans to shop talk and safety, and a listing of tools for sale.
