Sycamore
Latin name: Platanus occidentalis
Family: Plantanaceae
Distribution: Eastern US
Description: The heartwood is light to medium brown in color, with the sapwood being a more pale creamy color. The grain is interlocked and it also has a fine texture. Quarter sawn boards typically exhibit a fleck or scale pattern. (34 lbs/ft3)
Working Properties: It generally works quite easily, however due to it’s interlocking grain, sharp cutter edges are required when machining. (34 lbs/ft3) Although it has poor steam bending properties, it glues up well and takes a good finish.
